This Mother’s Day, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you Clotide Achille, who is 58 years old and has been a Madan Sara, or a vendor in Haiti’s informal markets, for 37 years. Clotide is the mother of five children and one of the Madan Sara who has worked the longest in the Tèt Dlo outdoor market, located in Petionville, Haiti. When Clotide’s husband died in 1997, she was left to raise her children as a single mother, and she ensured their education was paid all while working around the clock to run her business. Clotide’s story is at the heart of the Madan Sara documentary. She is a living example of the strength and power that Haitian women carry within this society.
Today, on Haitian Mother’s Day, I invite you all to watch the Madan Sara trailer and hope that you will join me in wishing Clotide, and all other mothers, a very happy Mother’s Day.
